Porters Ski Trip

Introduction

On the 15th of August 2016 Room 1 went to Porters Ski Field to go skiing and snowboarding. We would be skiing for around 4 hours, and travelling for about 4 hours.

Before Porters

First, I woke around the 6:00 AM area. This meant I had less than 45 minutes to get ready. So then me and my parents got all my gear together (thanks for helping Matthew, I say this with sarcasm). We had about five minutes left before we had to be at school. So we hopped in the car and dragged up the heavy gear and got to school. We had to leave about 5 minutes later. We were now in the car travelling to Porters!

At Porters

We got there around 9:00 AM. We got out of the car and boy was it slippery! We first had to make our way down to the place where we rented our skis, skiing boots, snowboard and snowboarding boots. We had to then walk all they way back up the hill to our lessons. The lessons taught us how to ski and how to stop using our ski but unfortunately, I kept falling over. So my first 2 hours I was falling over. Luckily though, we stopped for lunch.

After lunch I luckily finally got better at stopping and turning. But unfortunately most of my friends had moved onto the intermediate, while I was still on beginners. But I had faith in myself to get to the intermediate stage! I especially got good at turning and braking in the final hour, though I was sore, I got better. Until finally I couldn’t handle it anymore, I was just to sore. So I turned in my skis, my ski boots and put my shoes on and went to the car. 30 Minutes later we were back on the road again.

Conclusion

We got down the mountain alive and in one piece. But it was around 2 hours later when we got back to Greymouth. We were up at the school so me and my brother (Matthew) went to a friends house. They were kind enough to give us a ride to our house. The skiing trip to Porters was exciting all around. Though I was stuck on the beginners slope the whole time, it was still a fun experience and I’m glad I got to be part of the group and I’m glad that I got to do it.

  1. What a great trip that was. I like your work here Josh, & I can't wait to get up to the slopes with you so you can show me how to ski. :-) WR

  2. Hey Josh - I thought this was a really good piece of writing - I know how much you don't like travelling and also that your feet are still giving you trouble so you really would have been sore by the end of that trip. Next year I bet that you will be on the intermediate slope before you know it!! I would like to have seen a photo of you on the slopes on this blog - does Ms Kemp have one you could put on here?
