Science Badge Work (With Beau)

Science Badge

WALT appreciate that science is a way of explaining the world. WALT build on prior knowledge and to share and examine our knowledge; to carry out experiments and simple investigations.

24**  Describe and record the different aggressive behaviours of
three types animals

Gray Wolf

The Gray wolf is a territorial animal that can be very vicious when defending their territory. The Gray Wolf is usually found in Alaska, all across Canada and in the northern parts of Greenland. While they once were found all across North America they have been removed from most parts of America. The Gray Wolf has a scientific name of Canis lupus. It usually kills large hoofed animals like Caribou that trespass. They are able to do this because they have strong bodies and bones. Another reason why they can do this is because, like other wolves they usually live in packs.

Rattlesnake

Rattlesnakes are a snake with a potent bite and a rattle on the end of it’s tail. Rattlesnake are aggressive because they have a competition between them and desert coyote. These two will fight over the smallest things such as pocket mouse for survival. When a predator comes close the rattlesnake rattles the rattle at the end of it’s tail and bites anything that gets close. Rattlesnakes are found from Western Canada to Central Argentina and a large majority of species live in American Southwest and in Mexico. 4 species may be found east of the Mississippi river.

Leopard
The Leopard surprisingly is actually a scavenger. While the Leopard is commonly known as an animal that kills for food, they will and does actually scavenge. They are found across most areas of Africa. They also are found in the Eastern and Southern, and Southwestern parts of Asia. They are one of the most elusive and dangerous animals in the world.

** Write notes on 3 introduced animals e.g. possum, deer, goat, stoat, rat etc, stating the effect they have on our environment.

Possum

The Australian brushtail Possum were introduced to us 1837 for trading fur. Possums in Australia are native. Possums have affected us by killing tree, eating native birds and eggs. On the bright side we get free fur. To stop possums the government has decided to a poison called 1080. 1080 is a poison that affects all wildlife in the New Zealand by killing it  and the money we’re wasting on it.It cost 10 Million dollars to drop 800 tonnes. There are much safer method such as kill traps, shooting them and trapping them.

Cats

Cats first originated in Egypt and central asia. They were worshiped by the Egyptians as if they were gods, thus creating The Sphinx. Cats have been a common house pet for people all across the world. They are commonly believed to first have be domesticated around the 4000 BC area. Their tails make them the best balanced mammals in the world.

Stoat

A Stoat skinny furry rat that is a member of the mustelid family. Stoats were introduced to New Zealand in the 1880 to control introduced animals such as ferret, possum and rats, but unfortunately they have become a pest their self.

20** Find out the migrating patterns of a large animal e.g. wildebeest, caribou, whales. Show the migratory route on a map

*Take an interesting photo of a pet or animal you know

*** Make a scientific investigation of an animal owned or kept near you. Include its natural habitat, feeding patterns, housing care, condition.
Blue Heeler Cattle Dog

IMG_0013.JPGBlue heeler cattle dogs came from Australia and needs plenty of exercise. Blue heelers are very intelligent so it makes them easy to train. They need to be feed twice daily. Blue heelers are bred for herding cattle and nipping their legs. (Blue Heeler picture to right of article).

**Visit a wildlife park, sanctuary, vet clinic, RSPCA, city pound etc. Write about it.

I visited the SPCA and while I could only see the cats, I knew what an amazing place it was. They treated all the cats with kindness. They feed them, they pet them (so did I) and showed them love. While some of them were scared and shy, I could see that they trusted them. All they need to do is treat the with kindness and show them somebody does care about them.

Peace? Invisible.

Fractions D.L.O

Fractions

Mixed Fractions

A mixed fraction is a fraction that has one or more whole numbers and a fraction. An example of this would be 1 and a ½.

Improper Fractions

An improper fraction is a fraction when the numerator is bigger than the denominator. Example: 7/5, this should be 1 and ⅖ but since it’s improper it’s 7/5.

Equivalent Fractions

An equivalent fraction is a fraction that is the same as another fraction. A simple example of this is ½ = 2/4.

Porters Ski Trip

W.A.L.T write to express ideas.
Context:Ski Trip.
We were allowed to choose the way we respond to the ski trip.

Introduction

On the 15th of August 2016 Room 1 went to Porters Ski Field to go skiing and snowboarding. We would be skiing for around 4 hours, and travelling for about 4 hours.

Before Porters

First, I woke around the 6:00 AM area. This meant I had less than 45 minutes to get ready. So then me and my parents got all my gear together (thanks for helping Matthew, I say this with sarcasm). We had about five minutes left before we had to be at school. So we hopped in the car and dragged up the heavy gear and got to school. We had to leave about 5 minutes later. We were now in the car travelling to Porters!

At Porters

We got there around 9:00 AM. We got out of the car and boy was it slippery! We first had to make our way down to the place where we rented our skis, skiing boots, snowboard and snowboarding boots. We had to then walk all they way back up the hill to our lessons. The lessons taught us how to ski and how to stop using our ski but unfortunately, I kept falling over. So my first 2 hours I was falling over. Luckily though, we stopped for lunch.

After lunch I luckily finally got better at stopping and turning. But unfortunately most of my friends had moved onto the intermediate, while I was still on beginners. But I had faith in myself to get to the intermediate stage! I especially got good at turning and braking in the final hour, though I was sore, I got better. Until finally I couldn’t handle it anymore, I was just to sore. So I turned in my skis, my ski boots and put my shoes on and went to the car. 30 Minutes later we were back on the road again.

Conclusion

We got down the mountain alive and in one piece. But it was around 2 hours later when we got back to Greymouth. We were up at the school so me and my brother (Matthew) went to a friends house. They were kind enough to give us a ride to our house. The skiing trip to Porters was exciting all around. Though I was stuck on the beginners slope the whole time, it was still a fun experience and I’m glad I got to be part of the group and I’m glad that I got to do it.
